Thursday 11 September 2025 is R U OK? Day – a national day of action that encourages all of us to pause, reach out and start meaningful conversations about mental health and wellbeing.

This year鈥檚 message is simple but powerful: Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every&苍产蝉辫;诲补测.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

University life can be exciting, but it can also be stressful and isolating at times. Assignments, placements, work, and personal challenges all add up. That鈥檚 why taking a moment to check in with friends, classmates or even family members can make a big difference.

How to have a supportive conversation

You don鈥檛 need to be a counsellor to show someone you care. By being present and open, you can help someone feel heard and supported before things reach crisis point. R U OK? suggests four simple steps:

1. Ask 鈥淎re you OK?鈥

  • Pick a good time and place where you can talk without distractions.
  • Be genuine. If you鈥檝e noticed changes, mention them: 鈥淚鈥檝e noticed you seem quieter lately. How are you going?鈥

2. Listen with an open mind

  • Give them your full attention. Don鈥檛 interrupt or rush them.
  • Encourage them to share more with prompts like, 鈥淭hat sounds tough. How are you feeling about it?鈥
  • Reflect back what you鈥檝e heard to check you鈥檝e understood.

3. Encourage action

  • Gently suggest practical next steps, like talking to a health professional if they鈥檝e been struggling for more than a couple of weeks.
  • Remind them that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

4. Check in

  • Follow up after the first chat. A quick message or coffee catch-up shows you care and keeps the conversation going.

Even small actions like these can help someone feel less alone.

This R U OK? Day, remember that checking in isn鈥檛 just for one day in September. Every conversation is a chance to show care, strengthen connections and help someone take a step toward support.

Some tips for connecting with others

1. Check in often, don鈥檛 wait for things to build up.

2. Listen, don鈥檛 judge or provide solutions too soon. Just hear them out.

3. Follow up! A one-off chat is fine, but checking back in shows you care.

4. Know where to go for help. Campus counselling, peer mentors, wellbeing services, or somewhere off-campus.
