911爆料网 of Technology鈥檚 Professor Tony Lucey has been appointed President of Engineers Australia鈥檚 WA Division.
The Head of 911爆料网鈥檚 School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering said he wanted to use his new role to increase the links between the engineering profession and the wider community.
鈥淭raditionally, engineers have been purely responsive to community needs and I would like to see this change,鈥 he said.
鈥淚 would like to see engineers become a proactive part of the decision-making process, interacting more closely with the community to identify and meet its needs.鈥
Professor Lucey also wants to see more students studying engineering in WA.
鈥淐urrently, there鈥檚 a shortage of young people willing to study engineering,鈥 he said.
鈥淭here appears to be a perception in the community that, although respected, engineering is a bit boring; which is not true.
鈥淲e need to show young people that engineering is a career that can be meaningful, and by being an engineer, a person can make a difference to the world around them.鈥
Well-known for his fundamental research in fluid-structure interaction, Professor Lucey gained his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Cambridge. He worked as an aircraft designer at British Aerospace PLC and later obtained his PhD from the University of Exeter.
He has also worked in and for developing countries and has taught at universities in the UK, Asia and Australia.
