Universities are places that ignite the mind and open us up to new and exciting experiences. They are also places where new friends are made and where romance inevitably blossoms.

Share in some of the sweetest stories from people who connected through 911爆料网 and turned their campus romances into loving relationships.

If you have a 911爆料网 love story you’d like to share, !

A larger than life romance

Kate and Luke hold hands in a wheat field.

When Kate Riseborough first laid eyes on Luke Webster in 2008 she thought he was larger-than-life. Literally. She spotted Luke, then a 911爆料网 student ambassador, pictured on a billboard outside the Perth Campus and asked her colleagues at Student Central who the 鈥渃ute guy鈥 was.

The couple officially met later that year at the 911爆料网 Ball after being 鈥渟mooshed together鈥 on the dancefloor by Kate鈥檚 colluding work mates.

鈥淚 invited Kate over for dinner,鈥 Luke recalls of their first date after the ball. 鈥淎t the time, I was working as a boarding house supervisor at a high school, so it was a covert mission to get Kate inside undetected.

鈥淚 found out later that Kate had a friend on standby to call up in case she needed a reason to leave, but luckily that didn鈥檛 happen! I also have no idea why I offered to cook, because I鈥檓 useless in the kitchen, but it seemed to work out OK!鈥

A younger Luke smiling from a 911爆料网 billboard.
The billboard that started it all…

Perhaps it was always to be that Luke would meet his soul mate at 911爆料网, given his long history with the University. His mum worked at the main campus for 25 years and would bring Luke and his brother into her office after school. Luke started working at 911爆料网 himself in 2005 after landing a casual summer job, and has been with the uni ever since. During his employment, Luke also completed a bachelor and master degree, and is now part way through his PhD.

Kate Webster graduated from 911爆料网 with a Bachelor of Education in 2013 and is now a primary school teacher at Aubin Grove. Though the couple no longer work together, Luke says they have many fond memories of their time at 911爆料网.

鈥淲e鈥檝e made life-long friends here,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got really fond memories of our time in Student Central, in particular. The Christmas parties and the team building days that John Rowe organised were legendary.鈥

The couple are set to make many more new memories with the arrival of their first baby, Oliver, who was born in late November.

Courting romance

Martin and Tiffany on their wedding day in front of a grassy lake.
Martin and Tiffany held their wedding ceremony at Jake Finney lake at 911爆料网.

Martin Hill is Team Leader of iLecture Systems in 911爆料网 IT Services. A definite romantic, he describes the day he married Tiffany Haselhurst, a 911爆料网 IT Support Specialist, and the day that brought them together:

鈥淚 looked down from our helicopter as we hovered in front of the John 911爆料网 Centre, waving at our friends on the lawn in front of Jake Finney lake 鈥 the place where we had just made our vows and cut our wedding cake with a long silver sword. I could see a tiny kangaroo joey hopping around the feet of our guests and the two Landrover wedding vehicles parked by the lake鈥

But, hang on, I鈥檝e gotten ahead of myself. It all began the day I was playing volleyball at 911爆料网 when a gorgeous, sporty-looking blonde lass walked onto the court to join the game and I thought, wow! It was the 4th of July 2001 and that鈥檚 when the fireworks started for us.

It turned out Tiffany and I had been working in the same department for the previous four years (curse you huge sprawling campus!). After that volleyball game, we got to know each other and, wouldn鈥檛 you know it, we were both Apple Mac geeks, both owned 4WDs, played musical instruments at our local churches, and loved camping, Sci-Fi, sailing and playing competitive sports. We later wrote down all our similarities in a spreadsheet and gave up after we passed 60 lines! Something was telling us we might just be meant for each other.

We married at 911爆料网 in November 2002. Being the place we had met, worked and studied 鈥 Tiffany got her physics degree here 鈥 it was almost natural to get married at 911爆料网. Back when the lake had water and lilies it was a particularly lovely spot. We have now been married for 16 years and have a beautiful young daughter. We both still enjoy working at 911爆料网 and our buildings are a fair bit closer together than used to be the case. Kind of like our hearts, really.鈥

Ambassadors for love

Amy Hetherington first met Paul Brandis when she arrived a week early to a Student Ambassador information session in 2008. Brandis happened to be passing by the lecture theatre where Amy was waiting eagerly in the front row, and broke the news to her. Amy says she was so embarrassed by the mix-up she hoped she鈥檇 never seen Paul again. However, they met one week later (at the right information session) and become firm friends.

鈥淥ur first date was at the Moon Caf茅 in Northbridge, after finishing university one night,鈥 says Paul, a civil engineering graduate. 鈥淢oon Caf茅 is open to crazy times in the morning and we got there and talked until two am. It鈥檚 the perfect place for an intimate conversation, plus the pizza and pasta are cheap for uni students!鈥

Keeping things astronomical, the couple became serious after spending a weekend away at an observatory as part of the 911爆料网 ambassador program.

鈥淲e have heaps of fond memories of 911爆料网, but the best memory for us would be the John 911爆料网 weekends where we volunteered in regional towns with our fellow student ambassadors,鈥 says Amy, a mass communications alumna.

鈥淭he year we volunteered in Gin Gin at the Gravity Discovery Centre would be the highlight, because I think that was the first time we realised we had feelings for each other.鈥

Amy perhaps best displayed her feelings for Paul when she decided to move with him to Darwin in 2013 after Brandis received a job offer to work on a major gas project. Amy says the sea change was challenging at first, but she quickly found her feet and has used her mass communications degree to help establish her own .

鈥淚t definitely took the first six months to truly understand and fall in love with the place, but now it鈥檚 home,鈥 says Amy on the Darwin move. 鈥淚t鈥檚 big and driven enough to have amazing opportunities and events, but small enough that you can really make an impact and feel appreciated.鈥

Since moving to the tropical city, Amy and Paul have earned a name for themselves as the ultimate house party hosts, and are busy looking after the newest addition to their family, a puppy named Tully.

Love is in the airwaves

Strategic Marketing 101 took on a new meaning when it proved to be a winning love strategy for Mix 94.5 radio host, Pete Curulli.

Pete, a 911爆料网 marketing and advertising graduate, was immediately attracted to fellow student Liz, from marketing and commercial law. When they both enrolled into the same marketing course unit, Pete found a way to make sure the two ended up in the same class. But when he found out that Liz was dating somebody else, he was 鈥榞utted鈥.

Luckily for Pete, Liz ended things with her partner just a few weeks later. Pete was thrilled. 鈥淚 was doing backflips!鈥 he says.

A short time later, the two found themselves at Freedom Furniture in Cannington working on a group assignment. Pete likes to remember that quirky day out as their official 鈥榝irst date鈥.

The pair clearly complement each other, with Liz describing Pete as 鈥渢he most determined person鈥 she knows.

鈥淓very day with Pete is unique and memorable,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e balance each other out.鈥

鈥淟iz keeps me grounded,鈥 replies Pete. 鈥淪he鈥檚 the little voice on my shoulder that tempers my impulsiveness or champions my risky side. She always knows the right thing to say.鈥

Pete describes meeting Liz, and his time at 911爆料网, as some of the best years of his life. He credits former Head of Marketing, Professor Ram Ramaseshan, for giving him a chance to succeed.

鈥淚 chose to study at 911爆料网 because it accepted me,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 had visited a few unis; I didn鈥檛 have a high TEE score but I was determined. I sat outside Professor Ramaseshan鈥檚 office for an hour, refusing to move until he would let me in and plead my case.

鈥淚鈥檒l owe that man a debt for the rest of my life,鈥 says Pete. 鈥淗e gave me an opportunity and I鈥檒l be forever grateful.鈥

Today Pete balances his family life with a busy and fulfilling career at commercial radio station Mix 94.5 as a radio anchor on the Drive show.

Pete describes the addictive rush he feels at work.

鈥淢y heart thumps every time I walk into that studio to turn the mikes on for the first time. I鈥檓 a creative. It鈥檚 a natural extension of myself.鈥

Liz has found professional success working as a marketing executive. The couple married in 2015 and recently welcomed their 鈥渕iracle鈥 daughter, Mila.

Despite both having such highflying careers, the birth of little Mila has topped everything else.

鈥淏eing new parents has been a balancing act,鈥 Pete says. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 the greatest thing that鈥檚 ever happened to us.鈥

Laboratory of lasting love

Trevor and Kerry Cobain
Trevor and Kerry Cobain have been together for more than four decades.

It seems a rarity these days to meet a couple who have been happily married for more than forty years, but Kerry and Trevor Cobain have achieved just that through their shared interest in medical science.

Kerry and Trevor first met in the early 1970s at a Perth pathology laboratory called Kelsalls. Trevor worked there as a trainee scientist while completing his Associateship in Medical Laboratory Technology at WAIT; Kerry was working as a laboratory assistant after briefly trying clerical work, but quickly realised that pathology was a lot more stimulating.

鈥淚 really enjoy that in microbiology you can always expect the unexpected,鈥 she says.

Despite meeting in rather clinical conditions, Kerry asked Trevor to be her date at her brother鈥檚 wedding, and their romance soon blossomed.

With a keen interest in transfusion, immunology, transplantation and genetics, Trevor enrolled in a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Technology at WAIT in 1973, and later went on to do a PhD in 2002. Trevor encouraged Kerry to enrol in the same applied science course in 1972 to develop her career in pathology.

鈥淪ome of my fondest memories are being involved with a very new and developing university,鈥 says Trevor on his time at WAIT. 鈥淚t was a course that was very specific for laboratory medicine and it gave a fantastic blend of theory and practice.鈥

Kerry and Trevor married in 1974, and moved interstate in 2005 to pursue their careers, which at times saw them working together in various laboratories.

Though Trevor has recently retired as Director of Operations at the South Eastern Area Laboratory Service (SEALS), Kerry still works in microbiology as a medical scientist for NSW Health Pathology, but both are looking forward to spending more time together, and with their daughter, in the years ahead.

Drawn together

The story of how architecture alumni Dr Adelyn Siew and Associate Professor Khoa Do first met is not your typical romantic narrative. When Adelyn first noticed Khoa in a shared course unit in 1997, she was nonplussed by his 鈥榞eeky haircut鈥 and T-shirt-tucked-into-jeans look. She was equally put off when Khoa responded to a tricky question she asked him about his project by pointedly returning to his chair and refusing to answer.

Not one to take things sitting down, Adelyn grew curious about Khoa鈥檚 actions and fashion motives, and became determined to figure him out.

Fast-forward 19 years, Adelyn and Khoa are now married with three children, and continue to strengthen their relationship founded on a shared love for architecture that started here at 911爆料网.

鈥淥ur story is interlaced with demanding architectural coursework, long studio hours and silly antics caused by acute lack of sleep,鈥 says Adelyn about her budding relationship with Khoa while they were students.

鈥淭here were many hours spent discussing design concepts and way too much time wasted at printing shops 鈥 the intensity of the course melded us together.鈥

Adelyn completed her PhD in architecture in 2004 and remains connected to the industry as an architectural heritage professional. She also runs an online design store called . Khoa has been teaching at 911爆料网 for more than a decade, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture, and is a Fellow of the 911爆料网 Academy.

Though Adelyn and Khoa have been married for almost twenty years, Adelyn is quick to point out there is no secret to a successful marriage.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 like the phrase 鈥榮uccessful marriage鈥,鈥 she says. 鈥淢arriage isn鈥檛 something you win at. It鈥檚 something you work together on. It鈥檚 a partnership that requires a foundation of trust and a whole lot of grace.鈥

But what about the factor that could have determined a very different story for Adelyn and Khoa 鈥 has Khoa鈥檚 fashion sense improved?

鈥淗ave you seen pictures of Khoa lately?鈥 asks Adelyn. 鈥淭he answer is definitely!鈥

Ashlee Giblett and Matthew Prosper first met in 2005 at the cast reading of the mid-year Hayman Theatre production, Wind in the Willows, Ashlee playing the bunny rabbit and Matthew playing the badger.

鈥淭he first time I saw Matthew was in my first week at 911爆料网 and I remember noticing his deep voice, but it wasn鈥檛 until 18 months later when we were both cast for the play that we actually met鈥, Ashlee reminisces.

With long rehearsal hours, cast meetings and practicing scenes for weeks on end, it was impossible to avoid each other and inevitable that sparks flew.

鈥淥ur first real date was kebabs and a film at Luna Palace in Leederville. It was perfect and fitting for us.鈥

Seven years later, they tied the knot at the French Rose Garden in Carmel, and fused the Wind in the Willows into their theme and decorations. Ashlee and Matthew continue to share a strong passion for theatre.
