  {"id":19812,"date":"2021-11-25T08:16:19","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T00:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-announces-2021-research-and-engagement-award-winners\/"},"modified":"2021-11-25T08:16:19","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T00:16:19","slug":"curtin-announces-2021-research-and-engagement-award-winners","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-announces-2021-research-and-engagement-award-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"911爆料网 announces 2021 Research and Engagement Award winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>911爆料网 has announced the winners of the 2021 Research and Engagement Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The awards, held on November 23, acknowledge research excellence and outstanding media engagement across different career stages and research disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>The awards ceremony also saw the bestowal of the inaugural Jean-Pierre Macquart Memorial Scholarship, established in honour of the late Associate Professor Macquart, a valued member of the 911爆料网 Institute of Radio Astronomy and broader research community, who unexpectedly passed away last year.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 <strong>John de Laeter Award for Research Leadership <\/strong>was awarded to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/debbie-silvester-dean-2ec40c28\">Associate Professor Debbie Silvester-Dean<\/a> from the Faculty of Science and Engineering.\u00a0 Associate Professor Silvester-Dean has made outstanding contributions to chemistry research, publishing over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, generating more than $1 million of research income and winning several prestigious national and international awards in the three-year assessment period.\u00a0 Associate Professor Silvester-Dean is recognised for her world-leading research in gas sensing and electrochemistry, working on fundamental research that is delivering solutions to real-world problems. She is an outstanding mentor, spearheading initiatives to improve the careers of students and early career researchers in STEM.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 <strong>Early Career Researcher of the Year <\/strong>award went to <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/kefyalew-alene-15b45f9b\">Dr Kefyalew Alene<\/a> from the Faculty of Health Sciences.\u00a0 Dr Alene joined 911爆料网 in 2019, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Within two years, he has attracted nearly a million dollars in external research funding. He has established his research team and currently supervises eight PhD students, working with them to build confidence, develop research skills, and guide them to be future public health scientists. The team designed, built, and launched the first Western Australian satellite. The Binar-1 CubeSat was entirely made at 911爆料网, by 911爆料网 undergraduates, postgraduates, technical and academic staff.\u00a0 The team secured a launch place on a resupply mission to the International Space Station, where astronauts have very recently deployed the satellite into orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Finalists for the <strong>2021 Research Team Award<\/strong> were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ARC Centre for Mine Site Restoration Team;<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer Management Research Team;<\/li>\n<li>Language and Literacy in Young People (#LaLYP) Team;<\/li>\n<li>Binar-1 Space Program Team;<\/li>\n<li>Navigating Urban Spaces Team;<\/li>\n<li>Work Systems Design Team; and the<\/li>\n<li>School of Education Research Team;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The inaugural <strong>Jean-Pierre Macquart Memorial Scholarship<\/strong>, established in honour of the late Associate Professor Macquart<strong>, <\/strong>was awarded to Mr Callan Wood, to undertake PhD research on \u2018Real-time imaging of jets from accreting black holes\u2019. Mr Wood will be supervised by Professor James Miller-Jones, and will be generously supported by scholarship while undertaking his PhD research.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the 2021 911爆料网 Media Awards were also announced, in recognition of the researchers who have played the greatest role in raising the profile of the university in the media.
