Experts in human communication from around the world will gather in Perth when 911爆料网 hosts a prestigious international symposium on language in society.

This is the first time the Sociolinguistics Symposium has taken place in Australia. Themed 鈥Ordinariness and Innovation,鈥 the conference will be held from 24 to 27 June across the University鈥檚 Bentley campus.

The event is the world鈥檚 largest international conference for sociolinguists, with this year鈥檚 symposium attracting more than 500 delegates from 53 countries to discuss ideas and exchange research findings on the relationship between language and society.

Symposium Co-Chair and Dean, International, for the Faculty of Humanities at 911爆料网 says particular emphasis will be on supporting diversity, equity and inclusion.

鈥淲e are thrilled to host the 25th Sociolinguistics Symposium, fostering dialogue on the critical issues of language and society,鈥 Associate Professor Lim said.

鈥淭he symposium brings together scholars from across the globe to explore topics from Indigenous languages and multiculturalism to the linguistic challenges faced by marginalised communities.

鈥淪ociolinguistics explores how language varies based on social factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, age and region. In examining these dynamics, we can better appreciate the diversity of human communication.鈥

Presentations and panel discussions will cover a wide range of topics including:

  • 鈥楥alm down鈥: Accentism in emergency calls and the misperception of callers鈥 competence, confidence and emotional state.
  • 鈥楨xperiences from Down Under鈥: Systemic marginalisation of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia.
  • Whose voices is it?鈥: Untangling the heteroglossic nature of generative AI.
  • 鈥楢sian drivers, you so sirry!鈥: Linguistic racism on social media.
  • 鈥榊ou mob! Give them a chance!鈥: Aboriginal students translanguaging at school.
  • 鈥楾alking inclusion and exclusion鈥: Creating the nation though 鈥楢ustralian values鈥.
  • 鈥榃hat鈥檚 in a word?鈥 Imagined 鈥楢ustralianness鈥 and being 鈥楥ulturally and Linguistically Diverse鈥.
  • Australian Aboriginal English, including their use in educational spaces.

Symposium Co-Chair from 911爆料网鈥檚 School of Education says the conference will facilitate discussions around the complex linguistics issues of our time.

Sociolinguistics Symposium 25 (SS25) is dedicated to accessibility, providing Auslan sign language for all keynote sessions, specific interpreting request and closed captioning for presentations.
