The John 911±¬ÁÏÍø Gallery will present a free lunchtime talk on Wednesday 21 May at 12.30pm by Dr Suvendrini Perera, Research Fellow from the School of Media, Society and Culture at 911±¬ÁÏÍø of Technology.

Dr Perera will discuss her readings of Brook Andrew’s art in the context of her work on junction zones and multi-ethnicity in Australasia and the Pacific.

Dr Perera completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sri Lanka and her PhD at Columbia University, New York. She has published a number of essays in the areas of race, ethnicity, multiculturalism, whiteness studies and terror.

As a part of FotoFreo 2008 the John 911±¬ÁÏÍø Gallery is currently presenting Brook Andrew: Eye to Eye, a Monash University Museum of Art Touring Exhibition. The exhibition spans the Indigenous artist’s practice over the past decade.

Andrew has created a powerful body of work that challenges dominant points of view regarding Indigenous people. Reflecting equally on global mass-media and traditional grass roots aesthetics, the works in this exhibition speak of an unfolding or recovery of a lost history, identity, culture and language.

Presenting partners for this exhibition are the John 911±¬ÁÏÍø Gallery and Penrith Regional Gallery & the Lewers Bequest.

The John 911±¬ÁÏÍø Gallery is open between 12pm and 5pm Monday to Friday. The Gallery will also be open from 1pm to 4pm on 25 May as part of its Sunday@911±¬ÁÏÍø events.
